In March 2026, the International Seabed Authority said it had advanced negotiations on the Mining Code, the set of rules that would govern mineral exploitation in the international seabed. Mining has not fully begun on a commercial scale, but the pressure to make it possible is clearly growing. The reason is simple: the deep ocean contains valuable mineral deposits such as polymetallic nodules, cobalt-rich crusts, and seafloor sulfides. These materials can contain metals like nickel, cobalt, copper, and manganese, which are often linked to batteries and other modern technologies. The world is still dealing with the fourth global coral bleaching event , which NOAA confirmed on April 15, 2024 .
